Political profile — Harborline News, 2022
“Six years, the same answer. I stayed for the seventh.”
The assignment
A justice minister with a practiced smile and a practiced sentence. Six annual interviews, six identical answers about the missing case files. The desk wanted a seventh attempt. I wanted the question she had never been asked.
Profile reporting is often stenography with better lighting. This time we did the opposite: one camera, no time limit, and the full archive of her six previous answers printed on the table between us. When she reached for the familiar sentence, I pointed at the pile and asked what it cost her to keep saying it.
There was a forty-second silence. Then the seventh answer — eleven minutes that re-framed her entire tenure and led two papers to reopen the files story.

The stay
Power performs. Patience interrupts.
Every previous interview had run exactly nine minutes — her staff's rule. We agreed to no clock. The crew was told to let tapes run through the silences, because the silence was the interview.
What aired ran eleven minutes and seventeen seconds, and the minister's office requested the full transcript for their own archive — the first time a subject asked to keep our footage.
